Just as a rug's pattern and color make a difference in a space, the size and placement can transform the look and feel of a room. Use the tool below for a personalized recommendation, or scroll down for the full per-room guide.
Tell us about the room — we'll tell you the right size.
Which room?
The focal point of any living room is the seating area, and its dimensions and layout will be the most important factor when choosing a rug size. A too-small rug can make a sweeping space feel cramped while a larger rug will give even tiny rooms a spacious, coordinated look.
For a bedroom rug, the size of your bed determines the rug size. Traditional placement is perpendicular to the bed with the front legs on top and plenty of rug visible on all sides.
Chair legs should remain fully on the rug whether tucked in or pulled out, with 18–36 inches of rug extending from each edge of the table. Remember to account for extendable leaves.
Your hallway rug should extend down at least 75% of the length of the hallway. You should also be able to see your flooring on either side of the rug.
Rugs in front of the sink or stove help ease pain in the feet, legs and lower back. Keep the rug's edge at least six inches away from walls and cabinets.
For kids' rooms, the same sizing rules used for adult bedrooms apply. Choose a rug that extends beyond either side of the bed, or a large one covering most of the floor space.
The right outdoor rug and furniture can make your patio as inviting as your living room. Follow similar guidelines — leave 18–24 inches between the rug edge and the patio.
For most living rooms, an 8×10 or 9×12 rug works best. Place the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug, leaving 12–18 inches of exposed floor around the edges. For larger rooms (14 ft or wider), a 9×12 or 10×14 grounds the entire seating area.
An 8×10 rug is the standard recommendation for a queen bed. It gives you 18–24 inches of rug on each side — enough to step onto comfortably when you wake up. Place the rug so the foot of the bed sits roughly in the middle.
A 9×12 rug is ideal for a king or cal-king bed. It extends 2–3 feet beyond each side of the bed, providing a soft landing on both sides every morning.
An 8×10 rug works for most dining rooms that seat 6. The rule is 24 inches of rug beyond the table on each side — enough that chair legs stay on the rug even when pulled out. For a larger table that seats 8–10, go up to a 9×12.
A hallway runner should be 4–6 inches narrower than the hall width, leaving a visible border of floor on each side. For length, aim for the full length of the hallway minus 12–18 inches at each end. Common sizes are 2×8, 2.5×10, and 3×12.
Yes — a rug should be wide enough that at least the front legs of your sofa rest on it. A rug narrower than your sofa creates a floating, disconnected look. For a standard 84-inch sofa, an 8-foot-wide rug (8×10) is the minimum; a 9×12 is ideal.
